A Day in the Forest: Volunteering with The Mersey Forest at Griffin Wood
At INTX, our commitment to sustainability goes beyond words, it’s about taking action. On Friday, 13th December, some of our team members had the opportunity to roll up their sleeves and get involved in an inspiring volunteer day with The Mersey Forest at Griffin Wood in St. Helens. From tree planting to woodland management, the day was a hands-on chance to contribute to creating a greener future while deepening our partnership with this incredible organisation.
Why We Partner with The Mersey Forest
Our relationship with The Mersey Forest is grounded in shared values. This organisation is dedicated to transforming landscapes across Merseyside and North Cheshire through tree planting, woodland management, and community engagement. Our funding contributes to projects like the Liverpool Standard Tree Planting initiative, which aims to plant over 500 standard trees across neglected areas of Liverpool, creating greener, more inviting spaces for communities to enjoy.
A Hands-On Day at Griffin Wood
Our volunteering day was more than just a break from the office, it was a chance to directly support The Mersey Forest’s mission. The activities included clearing overgrown areas, coppicing, and planting new oak trees. These efforts are vital for maintaining the health and biodiversity of local woodlands, providing habitats for wildlife, and creating green spaces that future generations can enjoy.
As Managing Director Andrew Globe reflected, “It was so nice to get out of the office and get stuck into some hands-on forest management! We cleared overgrown areas, did some coppicing, and even got to plant new trees for the future. It was also great to meet the Mersey Forest team in person and learn more about the amazing work they’re doing to protect and improve our local environment.”
Learning Through Action
For many team members, the day offered new insights into the intricacies of woodland care. Ric, our Operations and Finance Specialist, shared:
“Getting stuck in with the Mersey Forest team at Griffin Wood was an insightful and rewarding experience. The team’s passion for their work was inspiring—they shared so much fascinating information about woodland management, the resources they use, and the long-term environmental impact of their efforts. I gained real insight into how these spaces are cared for and enjoyed getting hands-on with clearing areas to make way for planting new oak trees. It was amazing to understand the ‘why’ behind each step and to feel part of creating a cleaner, greener future. I can’t wait to volunteer again—and I’m already looking forward to returning in 20 years to find the oak trees I planted.”
The Impact of Our Efforts
The work we contributed at Griffin Wood aligns with The Mersey Forest’s larger goals, such as improving habitats, creating inviting green spaces, and building resilience in local woodlands. Our collaboration reflects the positive impact that can be achieved when businesses and environmental organisations work together. Each tree planted is a step towards a greener, healthier community, connecting existing woodland areas and supporting wildlife movement.
Looking Ahead
Our volunteer day was a reminder of the tangible difference we can make when we step outside our usual routines and engage with nature. It was also a reaffirmation of why our partnership with The Mersey Forest matters. We’re proud to support projects like the Liverpool Standard Tree Planting initiative, which brings life to underfunded public spaces and fosters community connections.
At INTX, we remain committed to sustainability and can’t wait for the next opportunity to get involved. For now, we look forward to seeing the long-term impact of our work at Griffin Wood and perhaps even visiting those oak trees again in the years to come.
